Meet James Gilbreath
James Gilbreath is a watercolor artist who was born and raised in Texas, where his love for art began in elementary school. Throughout his years in public school—when art programs were few and far between—he enrolled in every available class. In eighth grade, he won his first ribbon, a first-place award for a pastel drawing that his mother still proudly keeps.
In 1965, during the fall semester of high school and at just 16 years old, James took his first formal art class. It was there he was introduced to oil painting, a turning point that deepened his passion and commitment to art. He began entering art shows, earning ribbons—including multiple honors at the State Fair of Texas.
Over the decades, James has remained a dedicated painter, consistently filling canvases with vibrant, expressive work. He also spent a year in New Mexico (1978–79), where he continued painting and earned recognition in regional shows.
Today, James is an active member of the Plano Art Association and Artists Round Texas. He attributes his skills to years of persistent practice and love for the craft.
Artist's Statement
I started painting in my junior year of high school in 1965. I soon discovered that more people were interested in portraits of their pets than they were in portraits of themselves, which was good since I was much better at painting animals than I was at painting people. I like to think I’ve been getting better at painting over these past decades.
