About Gene Dillard

Gene Dillard is an award-winning portrait artist and member of the Portrait Society of America. His commissioned works—ranging from mayors and university presidents to families and pets—reside in private and institutional collections across the U.S.

Known for his richly textured oil paintings and moody, expressive palettes, Gene brings a striking realism and emotional depth to his portraits. As a dedicated teacher, he has taught at Southern Methodist University, the University of North Texas, and the Art Institute of Dallas. Through his work as an artist, educator, and community leader, Gene continues to inspire and elevate the art of portraiture.

Artist's Statement

I paint because I have to. I can not not paint. Lifelong, I have had a compulsion to draw and paint.

The joy of seeing something interesting, exciting (sometimes beautiful) emerge on canvas or paper is a magical feeling. It’s the same feeling of tossing a pebble in a pond and watching the response of the water spread out and touch the shore.

When painting, the shore is the viewer who respond to a unique creation. Whether the painting is of a beloved pet or the mayor of a city, the joy of creating is the same.
